Prison Custody Officer

Role: Prisoner Custody Officer Hours: 40 during training and then 35 hours per week when fully trained Location: West Thurrock Essential: UK Driving Licence We are currently recruiting for Prison Custody Officers to work 35 hours per week on various shifts. Serco`s Prisoner Escort and Custody Services (PECS) contract makes a critical contribution to the Criminal Justice System in England & Wales, by ensuring the safe, secure and decent transport of prisoners between courts and their associated prisons and police stations and the effective operation of court custody suites and associated docks. Your role as a Prison Custody Officer is to provide a safe and secure environment for prisoners committed into custody by the courts. A Prison Custody Officer supervises and manages the activities of prisoners. PCOs promote pro social behaviour, encourage prisoners to address their offending behaviour and ensure that all rules orders and instructions are followed. PRINCIPAL DUTIES: - Assessment and advice to prisoners using own experiences and integrity - Driving Duties - Carry out security duties as required, contributing to the safe and secure custody of prisoners - Ensure all incidents are reported and dealt with effectively, including bullying, assaults, substance misuse and self harm. Promote through own actions prevention policies - Supervise prisoners, keeping account of prisoners and maintaining order - Prepare reports ensuring they are fair and perceptive, comprehensive, concise, accurate and timely - Encourage prisoners to deal with personal challenges through offending behaviour programmes, take part in programmes as appropriate - Complete searching in adherence to local and National policy - Uphold respect for Prisoners, their property, rights and dignity - Apply authorised Control and restraint Training procedures where appropriate and authorised - Ensure Suicide and self harm processes are complied with fully. Provide appropriate care and support for prisoners at risk of self harm - Contribute to the information provision to prisoners as required - Report any concerns using the internal systems including SIR and Professional standards ESSENTIAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE: - UK Driving Licence - Previous experience within a Security / Enforcement role is desirable but not essential - Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team - Ability to share experience with colleagues and report accurately both verbally and in writing - Excellent communication skills - Excellent teamwork and co-ordination skills - Demonstrates a clear commitment to teamwork - Makes systematic and rational judgements based on relevant information to solve problems SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: - Serco Civil Government is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and all offers of employment are subject to security clearance checks and approval by the Home Office - Successful candidates must undertake any mandatory training at the request of the organisation, in line with Company policy
